Online Safety
At Kirklevington Primary School, we recognise that digital technology plays an important role in children’s learning, communication, creativity and everyday lives. From tablets and laptops to mobile phones, online gaming and social media, children are growing up in a connected world. Our aim is to help pupils become confident, responsible and safe users of technology, both in school and at home.
We believe that teaching children how to use technology safely is more effective than simply restricting access. Through our curriculum and wider school activities, pupils learn how to make informed choices online, protect their personal information, recognise potential risks and seek help when something does not feel right.
Online safety education is embedded throughout school life and is regularly updated to reflect the changing digital landscape. Children learn about topics such as:
- Keeping personal information private.
- Creating strong passwords and protecting online accounts.
- Respectful and responsible online communication.
- Cyberbullying and how to report concerns.
- Identifying scams, misleading information and online manipulation.
- Safe use of mobile phones, messaging apps and social media platforms.
- Online gaming safety, including chat functions, in-game purchases and age-appropriate content.
- Understanding digital footprints and the long-term impact of online actions.
- Recognising inappropriate content and knowing what to do if it is encountered.
- Developing healthy habits and balancing screen time with other activities.
- Understanding emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), and using them responsibly.
We work closely with parents and carers because online safety is most effective when school and home work together. We encourage families to take an active interest in their children’s online lives by talking regularly about the websites, apps, games and devices they use. Open conversations, clear expectations and appropriate parental controls can all help children enjoy the benefits of technology safely.
If you have any concerns about your child’s online safety or would like advice about supporting them at home, please contact the school. We are committed to working in partnership with families to help all children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
